As mid-size companies consolidate cloud and SaaS, the sysadmin who can run identity, endpoint, and backup across a hybrid estate is the difference between an outage and a quiet weekend. BLS projects 9% growth (2024–34) for Computer Systems Analysts and WEF flags cybersecurity and networks among the fastest-rising skills. AI is good at drafting scripts and surfacing anomalies; the admin still owns the change window, the runbook, and the call when it breaks at 2am.

Day to day
Patch and harden servers, manage identity and group policy, run backups and restore tests, respond to alerts, plan and execute change windows, document the estate, and partner with security and helpdesk on incident response.
